The gold standard for improving skin texture and reducing scars is carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers. These lasers emit energy that removes the superficial layer of the skin and stimulates the formation of new skin cells. The newest version of CO2 laser resurfacing (fractional CO2) uses very short pulsed light energy or continuous light beams to remove thin layers of skin. These beams penetrate the skin’s surface, where water in the skin cells absorbs them. When this happens, the epidermis, or superficial layer of your skin, is vaporized. The dermis, or middle layer, heats up, stimulating the growth of new collagen fibers. As the area heals, new firmer, smoother skin replaces the old layers.

This laser is used to treat wrinkles, scars, enlarged oil glands on the nose, and other conditions. Depending on the depth and surface area treated, recovery can take 1 to 2 weeks.

Chemical peels will achieve results using glycolic acid, lactic acid (AHA’s) or other mild acids of varying strengths to peel off the stratum corneum, where as a microdermabrasion will do this physically. It is also a very effective way to improve texture, tone, acne breakouts or age spots. Peels are known to leave you with a healthy glow and the softest skin.
